SomaruShort version: we collect only what's needed to run Somaru and save your progress. We never sell your data and we don't show third-party ads.
This Privacy Policy explains how Bijen Duwal ("we", "us") collects, uses and protects information when you use the Somaru mobile application (the "App").
1. Information we collect
- Account information. If you sign in, we receive your email address and/or an identifier from your sign-in provider (e.g. Sign in with Apple or Google).
- Learning data. Saved words, sentences and videos, watch progress, review history, achievements, streaks and study activity.
- Microphone audio. If you use the shadowing/speaking feature, the App accesses your microphone only while you are recording.
- Diagnostics. Crash reports and basic, non-identifying usage statistics that help us fix bugs and improve the App.
- Purchases. If you buy a subscription, payment is handled by Apple or Google. We never see your card details; we only receive your purchase status.
We do not collect your contacts, photos, precise location or browsing history.
2. How we use information
- To provide lessons, subtitles, dictionary and review features
- To save and sync your progress across devices
- To recommend videos that match your level and interests
- To diagnose crashes and improve the App
- To respond to your support requests
We do not sell your personal information and do not use it for third-party advertising.
3. YouTube API Services
Somaru uses YouTube API Services to display and play videos. By using Somaru, you agree to be bound by the YouTube Terms of Service. Video playback through YouTube is also subject to the Google Privacy Policy.
When you watch a video, YouTube/Google may collect information (such as device information and cookies) according to its own policies. Somaru does not access your YouTube or Google account data.
4. Third-party services
We use the following service providers, each with its own privacy policy:
- YouTube API Services (video playback)
- Apple App Store / Google Play (purchases and sign-in)
- [e.g. Firebase / Supabase] (accounts and data storage)
- [e.g. Firebase Crashlytics / Sentry] (crash reporting)
5. Data retention and deletion
We keep your data while your account is active. You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from Profile → Settings → Delete Account in the App, or by emailing bijen857@icloud.com. Deletion is completed within 30 days. See Delete your account.
6. Children's privacy
Somaru is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country), and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.
7. Security
We use industry-standard measures, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.
8. Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR, the CCPA or Japan's APPI), you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete your personal data, or object to certain processing. Contact us to make a request.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with a new "Last updated" date.
